Should I care if I see him as a FRIEND only?

So there this guy that I like but the way it's going it just seem like he is a flake. So if I just "don't care" with no real expectation and just see him as a friend, should I still spend time with him when he has time or wants to spend time with me???? If I end up putting him in the "friend"zone, I'm afraid it may just be that and nothing more? I either date someone or just be acquaintance friend. Most guys don't even want to be my friend or one on one hang out friend because it usually means "more" when we are alone hanging out. Plus I don't believe in friends with "benefits".
