Do you know this movie?

I dont know the name but it has a kid whos really shy or something and stays in a box with make believe friends and i think at one point he pretends to be a robot. Then some guy has to care for him because its his son. I dont know what movie it is i saw a trailer for it a long long time ago and its driving me nuts. I think it might have Timothy Hutton in it. please help
