Question about birth control side effects or other possible medical abnormality?

My gf is on the birth control quanese (sp?) which is the generic for seasonale. Recently she got her period but has had abonormal amounts of abdominal pain, vaginal swelling, and the blood and mucus ociated with her period has ranged from very spotty to heavy and black in color. I read the medical reviews on her birth control and found no reference to this as a side effect. Has anyone else had this problem or have any information pertaining to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Also she will be contacting her Dr. first thing tomorrow just hoping someone might have an idea.)
