Why do women perpetuate the lie that it doesn't matter if a guy is losing his hair?

Look at it the other way round. Why do you think the plastic surgery industry is so vast? - because men and women are just as superficial as each other. I'm sure men have 'flaked out' on women who have had the wrong size , the wrong shaped legs, or simply not been thin enough.
