Why is the Green Lantern not a popular super hero?

Usually, or from what i can tell, the Green Lantern is not very well known nor is it popular. Usually, super heroes are considered popular by their super power, but the green lantern isn't popular. Personally, I think making anything you want to come out of your hands if a pretty awesome super power. I guess it could be the name that the name is holding it back. Or perhaps the comic book wasnt good enough for people to like it, I've never read the comic personally. So... why dont people like the green lantern even though he has an awesome super power. Is their some kind of flaws from his super power or an incredible weakness. Why dont people like him, cause he's obviously considered lame enough to where he was almost made into a comedy starring Jack Black?
